New algorithms from UCSD improve automated image labeling

03-29-2007 · EurekAlert!

Electrical engineers from UC San Diego have made progress on a different kind of image search engine -- one that analyzes the images themselves. This approach may be folded into next-generation image search engines for the Internet; and in the shorter term, could be used to annotate and search commercial and private image collections.

  1. UC San Diego researchers give computers 'common sense'
    10-17-2007 · EurekAlert!
Using a little-known Google Labs widget, computer scientists from UC San Diego and UCLA have brought common sense to an automated image labeling system. This common sense is the ability to use context to help identify objects in photographs. For example, if a conventional automated object identifier labels a person, a tennis racket, a tennis court and a lemon in a photo, the new post-processing context check will re-label the lemon a tennis ball.

  3. UC San Diego researchers improve accuracy of breast cancer prognoses
    10-15-2007 · EurekAlert!
One of the many unknowns facing women who are diagnosed with breast cancer is predicting the likelihood that the cancer will spread to other parts of the body -- metastasize. Researchers from UC San Diego are looking to change that. UCSD bioengineering professor Trey Ideker is pioneering a more accurate approach for predicting the risk of breast cancer metastasis in individual patients. This work will appear in Molecular Systems Biology.

A choice from our ESA photo galleries

Tests conducted at Val de Reuil, France, to simulate the rendezvous of the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) with the International Space Station (ISS). Sensors mounted on an articulated industrial robotic arm (image) acted as the ATV, whilst a 120-tonne mobile platform represented the ISS. During simulations the platform was made to approach the robotic arm in a motion identical to the one expected when the real vehicles rendezvous in space next year.

Can conception be replaced by an automated artificial uterus? Researchers in Japan are building a tiny womb-on-a-chip in which an egg and sperm are fed in at one end and an early embryo comes out the other, ready to implant in a real mother. The device mimics the environment of the body using endometrial cells which line the womb. The researchers hope the chip could eventually be used to improve the success rate of IVF.
