Traces of nanobubbles determine nano-boiling

Using a microscope and photography with shutter speeds only a few nanoseconds long, researchers from NIST and Cornell University have uncovered the traces of ephemeral "nanobubbles" formed in boiling water on a microheater. Their observations suggest an added complexity to the everyday phenomenon of boiling, and may affect technologies as diverse as inkjet printers and some proposed cancer therapies.

The researcher has identified a drug that controls persistent nerve pain by targeting the part of the brain that experiences the emotional suffering of pain. The drug is D-Cycloserine, which has been used to treat phobic behavior over the past decade.

    A joint research team from the IRD, the CNRS and the University of Antananarivo has recently discovered a primary deposit of rubies in Madagascar. Combination of this new field data with the oxygen isotope composition gave the geologists the possibility to determine exactly the origin of all the rubies and sapphires found in alkaline basalts. This information could enable geologists locally to trace the origin back up to the parent-rock and thus increase the possibilities of exploitation of these gem stone deposits.

    Rice University scientists have captured the first optical images of carbon nanotubes inside a living organism. The research appears in the September issue of Nano Letters. The researchers fed carbon nanotubes to newly hatched fruit flies. Using a laser, they excited a fluorescent glow from the nanotubes and took pictures of the near-infrared glow with a custom microscope. The researchers hope the technique will be useful in finding new ways to diagnose disease.
