Fewer children and teens received antidepressants following FDA warnings

The number of children and teenagers prescribed antidepressant medications appears to have decreased following public warnings about suicidal behavior potentially associated with the drugs, according to a report published in the April issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. In addition, antidepressants are now more often prescribed to this age group by psychiatrists rather than primary care physicians.

Young adults from low-income families who received full-time early educational childcare as young children reported fewer symptoms of depression than their peers who did not receive such services. The findings are based on the group of high-risk children who were enrolled in the Abcedarian Project as infants. Young adults who received these early services seem to have been protected against the adverse affects of negative early home environments associated with depression in the control group.

Brain areas that control attention were thinnest in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who carried a particular version of a gene. However, the areas, on the right side of the brain's cortex, normalized during the teen years, coinciding with clinical improvement. While the gene variant increased risk for ADHD, it also predicted better clinical outcomes and higher IQ than two other common versions of the same gene in youth with ADHD.
