- Scholar explores the question of who speaks for science
02-19-2007 · EurekAlert!
What role can scientists play in public decisions about the development and deployment of weapons systems? As the United States continues to commit its troops and technology around the world, this question is worrisome to the public and to concerned scientists alike. According to Rebecca Slayton, a lecturer in the Program in Science, Technology, and Society at Stanford, there's some hope: Science gives experts an important, albeit limited, space for influencing public decisions.Slayton will make her case February 19 at the AAAS meeting.

- Potential early warning system for lung cancer identified.
10-10-2007 · EurekAlert!
An immune system protein could act as an early warning system for lung cancer, reveals research published ahead of print in the journal Thorax.Lung cancer kills around 900,000 people every year, and can take 20 years or more to develop fully. But it is usually only picked up at an advanced stage, when the chances of successful treatment are slim.

- Technologies to avoid friendly fire
02-21-2007 · EurekAlert!
New emerging technologies could soon help reduce the number of friendly fire incidents on the battlefield. One simple system called Rover is already improving mission accuracy in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Rover-equipped laptop gives the air controller on the ground the technology to see the battlefield scene through the aircraft pilot's eyes, before a bomb is released. Experts claim that if Rover had been available in 2003, the death, by friendly fire, of British soldier Matty Hull might have been avoided.
