Weighing the financial risks of nuclear power plants
04-03-2007 · EurekAlert!Power companies are rushing to invest in new nuclear reactors, largely because of promised government subsidies that make the investment seem as good as investments in other types of energy. A new study from UC Berkeley, LBNL and Georgetown researchers warns, however, that unexpected costs have often arisen in past nuclear plant construction, increasing electricity costs. Because new plants will use untested technologies, such cost surprises could happen again, making nuclear power less attractive financially.

- Plutonium or greenhouse gases? Weighing the energy options
10-23-2006 · EurekAlert!
Can nuclear energy save us from global warming? Perhaps, but the tradeoffs involved are sobering: thousands of metric tons of nuclear waste generated each year and a greatly increased risk of nuclear weapons proliferation or diversion of nuclear material into terrorists' hands.

- Power switch
09-20-2007 · EurekAlert!
The wisest energy strategy for the United States and other countries facing similar challenges is to move away from their reliance on large-scale centralized coal and nuclear plants, and instead, invest in renewable energy systems and small scale decentralized generation technologies. According to Benjamin Sovacool from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, these alternative technologies are simultaneously feasible, affordable, environmentally friendly, reliable and secure. His analysis is published in Springer's journal Policy Sciences.

- Higher levels of pollutants found in fish caught near a coal-fired power plant
11-07-2007 · EurekAlert!
Emissions from coal-fired power plants may be an important source of water pollution and fish contamination, say researchers at the University of Pittsburgh. Researchers found higher-than-EPA-recommended levels of mercury and elevated levels of selenium in channel catfish caught in a rural area downwind from a coal-fired power plant. Based on testing of 63 fish, they found that fish caught near the power plant had 19 times more mercury than store-bought fish.

Since 1979, the words "Three Mile Island" have been synonymous with the words "nuclear disaster." A recent IAP seminar asked the question: was the accident at the U.S. power plant really a public relations disaster and not a technical failure?

Scientists have identified three different signals that indicate damage to chloroplasts -- the photosynthetic factories of plant cells that give plants their green color -- but little is known about how the signal gets passed on to the nucleus. Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies made a big step towards explaining how chloroplasts let a cell's nucleus know when things start to go wrong at the periphery so nuclear gene expression can be adjusted accordingly.
