Biofuels: More than just ethanol
04-05-2007 · EurekAlert! As the United States looks to alternate fuel sources, ethanol has become one of the front runners. Scientists studied the greenhouse gas emissions and bioenergy of corn, hybrid poplar, switchgrass and other crops to determine the efficiency of various biocrops in terms of energy consumption and energy output.

- Biofuel economics
08-08-2007 · EurekAlert!
"Second generation" biorefineries -- those making biofuel from lignocellulosic feedstocks like straw, grasses and wood -- have long been touted as the successor to today's grain ethanol plants, but until now the technology has been considered too expensive to compete. However, recent increases in grain prices mean that production costs are now similar for grain ethanol and second generation biofuels, according to a paper published in the first edition of Biofuels, Bioproducts & Biorefining.

- MIT experts foresee efficient ethanol production
02-09-2007 · EurekAlert!
As the search for alternative fuel sources intensifies, more and more attention has been focused on ethanol--a fuel many see as desirable because it burns cleanly and can be produced from plants. In recent days, two MIT chemical engineering professors have weighed in on ethanol's potential -- Professor Gregory Stephanopoulos, in a Feb. 9 article for Science, and Assistant Professor Kristala Jones Prather, who testified during a Senate hearing on biofuels Feb. 1.

- MIT's pint-sized engine promises high efficiency, low cost
10-27-2006 · EurekAlert!
MIT researchers are developing a half-sized gasoline engine that performs like its full-sized cousin but offers fuel efficiency approaching that of today's hybrid engine system -- at a far lower cost. The key? Carefully controlled injection of ethanol, an increasingly common biofuel, directly into the engine's cylinders when there's a hill to be climbed or a car to be passed.

- Super-fermenting fungus genome sequenced
03-04-2007 · EurekAlert!
On the road to making biofuels more economically competitive with fossil fuels, there are significant potholes to negotiate. For cellulosic ethanol production, one major detour has being addressed with the characterization of the genetic blueprint of the fungus Pichia stipitis, by the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI) and collaborators at the U.S. Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory. The research is featured in the March 4 advanced online publication of Nature Biotechnology.
