New genomic tests guide choice of chemotherapy in cancer patients

10-22-2006 · EurekAlert!

Scientists at Duke University's Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy have developed a panel of genomic tests that analyzes the unique molecular traits of a cancerous tumor and determines which chemotherapy will most aggressively attack that patient's cancer.

  3. Pre-treatment blood test could guide lung cancer therapy
    06-05-2007 · EurekAlert!
A multi-center team, led by Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center investigators, has developed a new pre-treatment blood test that predicts which non-small-cell lung cancer patients will live longer when they are treated with certain targeted cancer therapies (Iressa, Tarceva). The mass spectrometry-based test, described in the June 6 Journal of the National Cancer Institute, may allow physicians to select the most beneficial therapy for each lung cancer patient, a step forward in the era of personalized medicine.

    09-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
Three genomic tests separately predict the likelihood that a patient's breast cancer will reoccur after surgery without additional treatment, and the cancer's vulnerability to chemotherapy or hormone therapy, researchers at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center report at the first American Society of Clinical Oncology ASCO Breast Cancer Symposium, Sept. 7-8, in San Francisco.

    03-20-2007 · EurekAlert!
After an initial chemotherapy treatment, radiation may be a better choice than surgery for patients with stage IIIA non-small-cell lung cancer, according to a randomized controlled trial published in the March 21 Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The authors suggest that a combination of chemotherapy and radiation should be the preferred treatment option for these patients.

Prostate-specific antigen tests to screen for prostate cancer are frequently performed among patients for whom the PSA test is not shown to be beneficial, and clinicians with certain characteristics are more likely to order such inappropriate screening tests, according to a report in the July 9 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

    11-03-2006 · EurekAlert!
There is new hope for some of the most seriously ill colon cancer patients today, following the release of a consensus statement by 72 leading oncology surgeons from 14 countries, including the United States. The Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Group (PSMG) has concluded that surgery, followed by heated chemotherapy delivered through the lower abdomen of the patient before leaving the operating room, may significantly increase the life expectancy for patients with Stage IV colorectal cancer.

  10. Preventing graft-vs.-host disease after bone marrow transplant -- without toxicity
    12-11-2006 · EurekAlert!
Most patients undergoing bone-marrow transplant must receive powerful chemotherapy drugs to suppress their immune system and prevent their bodies from rejecting the donated cells. New research shows that this chemotherapy increases the risk for graft-versus-host disease -- but also suggests that this risk can be reduced by replacing a natural antibiotic that's depleted when patients undergo chemotherapy. A multicenter study led by Children's Hospital Boston and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is about to test this idea.
