3 scientific societies applaud climate change report

The American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America applaud the efforts of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and its report, which points to the direct consequences of human-induced climate change. The presidents of the three societies issued a statement today in support of the IPCC’s 4th Assessment Report.

The ability to predict future climate changes also has improved, but efforts to understand the impact of such changes on society and analyze mitigation and adaptation strategies are still relatively immature, added the committee that wrote the report.

A statement newly released by the world's largest scientific society of Earth and space scientists -- the American Geophysical Union, or AGU -- updates the organization's position on climate change: the evidence for it, potential consequences from it, and how to respond to it. The statement is the first revision since 2003 of the climate-change position of the AGU, which has a membership of 50,000 researchers, teachers, and students in 137 countries.

In a novel coupling of experimental measurements and observed plant distributions across a tropical landscape, drought tolerance predicted plant distributions at both local and regional scales. This mechanism to explain a common observation will contribute significantly to models of land use and climate change.
