Drugs for Parkinson's disease may ease stroke-related disability
04-10-2007 · EurekAlert!Scientists have untangled two similar disabilities that often afflict stroke patients, in the process revealing that one may be treatable with drugs for Parkinson's disease. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis showed that stroke damage in a brain region known as the putamen is strongly linked to motor neglect, a condition that makes patients slow to move toward the left side.

- Researchers at BMC find disability does not necessarily follow disease in living to old age
02-11-2008 · EurekAlert!
Researchers from Boston Medical Center's New England Centenarian Study report that for a substantial proportion of their centenarian subjects, avoiding age-related diseases (i.e., stroke, cardiovascular disease, diabetes) may not be the key to their longevity; rather, the avoidance of disability may be a key feature in their exceptional survival. These findings appear in the February 11 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

- UIC chemists characterize Alzheimer's neurotoxin structure
12-03-2007 · EurekAlert!
A team of UIC chemists has characterized the molecular structure of the intermediate stage of plaque-forming amyloid fibrils, believed to cause Alzheimer's disease. The finding may lead to new drug targets for this and other amyloid diseases, such as Parkinson's and Creutzfeldt-Jakob.

- Early environmental exposure may accelerate age-related neurodegeneration
06-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
Exposure to iron during the first weeks of life in combination with exposure later in life to a common herbicide may contribute to the subsequent degeneration of brain cells associated with the onset of Parkinson's disease (PD), according to a new study in mice. The findings also showed that a compound that protects cells in the body from damage from certain forms of oxygen, a kind of antioxidant, could suppress such neural degeneration.

- Drug that lowers blood pressure might help prevent Alzheimer's disease
10-25-2007 · EurekAlert!
Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that is the most common form of dementia. Recent evidence indicates that some drugs used to treat high blood pressure might reduce the risk of developing AD. In a new study, the antihypertensive medication valsartan has been shown to reduce AD-like disease in mice.

- Europe to tackle brain disorder research by linking industry, academia
11-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
Attempts to cure brain-related disorders have proved less successful than therapies for other major conditions such as heart cancer, even though just as many people suffer from them. About 600 million worldwide each year are afflicted by depression alone, more than any other condition except heart disease, and yet of those given existing drugs, only half recover.
