    09-30-2006 · ScienceDaily
Transfer of a gene that produces a mutant form of good cholesterol provides significantly better anti-plaque and anti-inflammation benefits than therapy using the "normal" HDL gene, according to a mouse study conducted by cardiology researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and reported in the Oct. 3 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

  2. Why bad things can happen to the heart when 'good' cholesterol goes bad
    08-22-2007 · EurekAlert!
It's yet another example of how a good thing can go bad: Researchers have found evidence in laboratory studies that "good" cholesterol, renowned for its ability to protect against heart disease, can undergo detrimental changes in protein composition that make it "bad" for the heart. The study could lead to new lab tests and treatments for heart disease, they say. It will be presented in August at the American Chemical Society national meeting in Boston.

    01-10-2008 · EurekAlert!
Metabolic syndrome is a group of cardiovascular risk factors, including obesity, hypertension, prediabetes, and reduced HDL ("good") cholesterol. Because it is difficult to know when a child is at risk for metabolic syndrome, some doctors fear that children may not be properly diagnosed as a result. The February 2008 issue of The Journal of Pediatrics focuses on this issue by publishing a series of articles in an attempt to work toward a cohesive definition of metabolic syndrome in children.

  7. UGA researchers discover how human body fights off African parasite
    09-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
A team of researchers led by biochemists at the University of Georgia propose that T. b. brucei actually does infect humans but that the infection triggers release of hemoglobin from red blood cells. Hemoglobin appears to "arm" the human innate immune system by binding to a small fraction of high density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good cholesterol." The hemoglobin-HDL complex then becomes a super toxin and clears the body of trypanosomes.

  8. Statin therapy associated with regression of coronary atherosclerosis with key lipid level changes
    02-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
An analysis of data from four clinical trials suggests that statin therapy is associated with regression of coronary atherosclerosis when low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C or "bad" cholesterol) is substantially reduced and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C or "good" cholesterol) is increased, but it remains to be determined whether this degree of atherosclerosis regression will translate to meaningful reductions in cardiovascular events, according to a study published in the Feb. 7 issue of JAMA.

    03-25-2007 · EurekAlert!
Preliminary research suggests that use of a novel, potent drug to treat cholesterol disorders decreases triglycerides and increases HDL-C, the "good" cholesterol, but also raises some safety concerns, according to a study in the March 28 issue of JAMA. The study is being released early to coincide with its presentation at the American College of Cardiology's annual conference.
