USC study identifies factors attributed to later stage cancer diagnosis

04-15-2007 · EurekAlert!

Researchers from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California found that patients who received a later stage cancer diagnosis were likely to be living in an unsafe neighborhood, using public transportation and traveling at least 45 minutes to get to a doctor's office. The study will be presented at this week's American Association of Cancer Research in Los Angeles on April 15.

A study led by researchers at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and Harvard Medical School has identified seven genetic risk factors that predict risk for prostate cancer. According to the study's findings, these risk factors are clustered in a single region of the human genome on chromosome 8 and powerfully predict a man's probability of developing prostate cancer.

New research published in the November issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons shows that urban colorectal and lung cancer patients present at later stages of disease than rural patients do. This finding is contrary to the common assumption that rural patients with cancer present at a later stage of disease in comparison with urban patients.

  7. T-beta-RIII joins the fight against breast cancer
    12-07-2006 · EurekAlert!
Although the soluble factor TGF-beta suppresses tumor cell growth in early breast cancer, high TGF-beta levels later in disease are associated with a poor outcome. A new study using human breast cancer samples and mice, indicates that changes in expression of one TGF-beta receptor component, T-beta-RIII, might explain the distinct effects of TGF-beta at the different stages of breast cancer and that analysis of T-beta-RIII levels might help clinicians decide how aggressively to treat patients.
