Undergraduate helps discover beautiful quark combinations
10-23-2006 · EurekAlert!University of Rochester physics undergraduate Scott Field participated in the search for two subatomic particles whose existence was announced today by scientists at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Illinois. Field's research focused on the extremely rare quark of the "bottom" or "beauty" variety.

A strikingly unusual animal was recently discovered in the cloud-forests of Peru. The large rodent is about the size of a squirrel.The nocturnal, climbing rodent is beautiful yet strange looking, with long dense fur, a broad blocky head and thickly furred tail. A blackish crest of fur on the crown, nape and shoulders add to its distinctive appearance. Two color illustrations of Isothrix barbarabrownae, the bushy rodent, are available to the media.

Physicists of the DZero experiment at the Department of Energy's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory have discovered a new heavy particle, the Оb (pronounced "zigh sub b") baryon, with a mass of 5.774±0.019 GeV/c2, approximately six times the proton mass. The newly discovered electrically charged Оb baryon, also known as the "cascade b," is made of a down, a strange and a bottom quark.

On October 18, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave its approval to the new treatment as well.
