Middle School Maglev Contest at Brookhaven Lab, April 25

Model Maglev vehicles built by Long Island middle school students will be tested for speed, efficiency, and appearance at the 17th Annual Middle School Magnetic Levitation Contest. Maglev - the suspension, guidance and propulsion of vehicles by magnetic forces - was invented and patented in 1968 by Brookhaven Lab scientists Gordon Danby and James Powell.

Stephen Tuozzolo, a Sayville High School student, won $300 as the second-place winner, and Alicia Chionchio from Smithtown High School West, won $200 in third place.

Model Bridge Contest to be Held at Brookhaven Lab, March 24

Over 150 high school students from ten schools in Suffolk County have entered the 2007 Model Bridge Contest. The students designed and constructed model bridges according to certain size and weight specifications, with the goal being to build the lightest bridge that supports the most weight. Materials were restricted to basswood and glue.

Benjamin Coburn, a home-schooled student from Center Moriches, won first place in Brookhaven National Lab's 2007 Model Bridge Contest. Coburn won second place in the contest last year, and he also placed first in 2005. Over 150 students from 12 Suffolk County high schools entered their model basswood bridges in the contest with the goal of making the lightest bridge that held the most weight.

Almost 500 science projects from 114 Suffolk County schools were entered in the 2007 Elementary School Science Fair, sponsored by Brookhaven Lab. The Laboratory's Office of Educational Programs coordinated the fair, which was held at the Laboratory on May 5, and Brookhaven scientists and local elementary school teachers judged the projects.
