- Moderate prenatal exposure to alcohol and stress in monkeys can cause touch sensitivity
02-07-2008 · EurekAlert!
A new study that exposed monkeys to moderate levels of alcohol and stress in pregnancy found increased sensitivity to touch in the monkeys' babies. Using a brain neuro-imaging technique, the researchers found that sensitivities to touch were related to changes in the brain chemical dopamine one area of the brain. Since sensitivity to touch in human children can lead to behavioral and emotional problems, this research has important implications for preventing childhood disorders.

The phrase "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" has taken on new meaning for teenagers. A new study suggests that as teens enter adulthood, they are more likely to skip breakfast and increase their fast food consumption, and that both behaviors lead to an increased risk of weight gain. Researchers at the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center at the Miriam Hospital and Brown Medical School conducted the study.

- Double trouble for RA patients: PLC-gamma-2 regulates osteoclastogenesis and B cell differentiation
10-19-2006 · EurekAlert!
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is caused by the immune system inappropriately attacking the joints. The autoimmune response also leads to the recruitment and/or differentiation of cells known as osteoclasts -- cells that degrade and resorb bone. Current treatments for RA target either the joint-specific immune response or the osteoclast-mediated bone erosion but a new study suggests that targeting a protein known as PLC-gamma-2 might lead to control of both immune-mediated joint destruction and osteoclast-mediated bone erosion.

- Promising treatment for post traumatic stress disorder sleep disturbances
04-17-2007 · EurekAlert!
For sufferers of post traumatic stress disorder, sleep disturbances are among the most treatment-resistant symptoms and can lead to drug and alcohol abuse and even suicide. Previously, there has been little success in treating these sleep disorders with psychopharmacologic approaches. In a study in the April 15 issue of Biological Psychiatry, researchers have found that an inexpensive, widely available drug was successful in reducing symptoms in chronic PTSD patients.

- How parents react to material hardship found to be key to how income affects children
02-07-2007 · EurekAlert!
Research drawing from the "Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999" challenges the accepted finding that family income is directly associated with parental stress. The study found that parents who make more money can better provide more cognitively stimulating materials, and that material hardship can lead to parental depression and conflict. These effects in turn may cause parents to show less affection towards children, who then may become depressed or misbehave.

03-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new study in the March issue of the journal Cell Metabolism, published by Cell Press, has identified a common link between multiple assaults on the body, including saturated fats, obesity, and certain types of drugs, all of which can lead to insulin resistance. The researchers found that these metabolic stresses lead to an upswing in production of a particular kind of fat molecule, known as ceramide.

- DNA damage response confers a barrier for viral tumorigenesis
09-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers at the University of Helsinki, Finland, have discovered that activation of the DNA damage response in the early stages of Kaposi's sarcoma development functions as an anti-cancer barrier also in virus-induced malignancies. The results of the study demonstrate that one of the viral latent proteins induces replicative stress in endothelial cells, which leads to senescence and activation of the DNA damage response.
