Data show treatment with Remicade reduced hospitalizations for ulcerative colitis patients by half
10-23-2006 · EurekAlert!Patients with UC treated with Remicade® (infliximab) had an approximate 50 percent reduction in mean number of hospitalizations per year compared with placebo, according to an analysis of long-term data from a Phase 3 clinical trial presented at the ACG meeting. Patients who responded and those who were in remission at one year had lower mean number of hospitalizations vs. non-responders through one year of treatment.

REMICADE significantly reduces the incidence of colectomy surgeries for patients with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. According to a primary analysis of long-term extension data from the Active Ulcerative Colitis 1 and 2 trials, there is a 41 percent reduction in the incidence of colectomy, the surgical removal of the colon, in patients receiving REMICADE through 54 weeks, compared to those receiving placebo.

The National Psoriasis Foundation and Amgen today released data, which show that nearly 40 percent of patients with chronic moderate to severe psoriasis are not currently receiving any treatment. Further, more than half of moderate to severe patients on treatment are not being treated in accordance with AAD guidelines, which state that patients diagnosed with chronic moderate to severe plaque psoriasis are candidates for phototherapy or systemic therapy, including biologic agents.

Findings from an integrated analysis of data from three pivotal, randomized, placebo-controlled trials showed that at week 10 more than three-quarters of patients with severe psoriasis receiving Remicade (infliximab) 3 mg/kg or 5 mg/kg achieved a 75 percent improvement in the chronic, inflammatory skin disease as measured by the Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI 75).

Data published today from a retrospective study of over 33,000 postmenopausal women showed that among patients newly prescribed one of the two most popular osteoporosis treatments, patients taking Actonel® (risedronate sodium) were approximately half as likely to sustain a hip fracture as those taking alendronate in the first year of treatment. These results were published today in the peer-reviewed journal Osteoporosis International.1

Amgen and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of Wyeth, today announced findings from a retrospective analysis, which demonstrated that ENBREL reduced C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation, in patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis following 12 weeks of treatment. Median reduction in CRP levels was 10 times greater in the ENBREL treated group compared to the placebo treated group. These results will be presented today at the American Academy of Dermatology Scientific Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

Treatment with the phosphate binder Fosrenol, lanthanum carbonate, was associated with slight improvements in bone formation in chronic kidney disease stage 5 patients with high phosphorus levels in the blood, according to long-term data presented at the American Society of Nephrology meeting. Additional studies presented at ASN document the efficacy and safety of the reformulated and higher-dose FOSRENOL tablets. Of the approximately 20 million Americans who have some form of kidney disease, more than 530,000 have developed CKD Stage 5.
