The origin of the brain lies in a worm
04-20-2007 · EurekAlert!Researchers from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg now reveal that the vertebrate nervous system is probably much older than expected. The study, which is published in the current issue of Cell, suggests that the last common ancestor of vertebrates, insects and worms already had a centralised nervous system resembling that of vertebrates today.

- Bottleneck in blood supply makes brain vulnerable to strokes
01-03-2007 · EurekAlert!
A team of University of California, San Diego physicists and neuroscientists has discovered a bottleneck in the network of blood vessels in the brain that makes it vulnerable to strokes. The finding may explain the origin of the puzzling damage to the brain's gray matter often detected in brain scans, especially among the elderly.

- Modern brains have an ancient core
06-29-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory now reveal that the hypothalamus and its hormones are not purely vertebrate inventions, but have their evolutionary roots in marine, worm-like ancestors. In this week's issue of the journal Cell they report that hormone-secreting brain centres are much older than expected and likely evolved from multifunctional cells of the last common ancestor of vertebrates, flies and worms.

- Research may unlock mystery of autism's origin in the brain
08-22-2007 · EurekAlert!
In the first study of its kind, researchers have discovered that in autistic individuals, connections between brain cells may be deficient within single regions, and not just between regions, as was previously believed.

- How Rett Syndrome mutation targets the brain
10-18-2006 · EurekAlert!
Researchers have pinpointed why mutations that cause Rett Syndrome (RTT) -- among the leading causes of mental retardation in females -- specifically target the brain rather than other body tissues. They said their findings yield important insight into the origin and course of the disease.

- Researchers discover gene essencial to cerebellum formation
03-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
A study published this week in the scientific journal PNAS provides new information on the origin of different cells in the cerebellum, an important component of the central nervous system found in all vertebrates, including humans, and the part of the brain that controls movement.

- Key to longer life (in flies) lies in just 14 brain cells
09-20-2007 · EurekAlert!
Fruit flies live significantly longer when the activity of the protein p53 is reduced in just 14 insulin-producing cells in their brains, new Brown University research shows. The results put scientists one step closer to understanding caloric restriction, a biochemical process proven to slow aging. Results appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

- Iron banded worms drying out of blood could be linked to Parkinson's and Alzheimer's
02-09-2008 · EurekAlert!
Researchers at the University of Warwick and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur have discovered that the mechanism that we rely on to transport iron safely through our blood can collapse into a state which grows long worm-like "fibrils" banded by lines of iron rust. This process could provide the first insight into how iron gets deposited in the brain to cause some forms of Parkinson's & Alzheimer's and Huntington's diseases.

University of Oregon biologists studying a common ocean-dwelling worm have uncovered potentially fundamental insights into the evolutionary origin of genetic mechanisms, which when compromised in humans play a role in many forms of cancer.

- Blame the brain for high blood pressure
04-14-2007 · EurekAlert!
The controversial idea that one cause of high blood pressure lies within the brain, and not the heart or blood vessels, has been put forward by scientists at the University of Bristol, UK.

- Origins of life
11-17-2006 · EurekAlert!
The origin of life lies in unique ocean reefs, and Rosenstiel School scientists have developed an approach to help investigate them better. An article published in Geology this month reveals how Dr. Miriam Andres' stromatolite investigation -- the first of its kind -- has begun to "fingerprint" ancient microbial pathways, increasing the understanding of how these reef-like structures form and offering a new way to explore the origins of these living records.
