Anxiety disorders linked to physical conditions
10-23-2006 · EurekAlert!Anxiety disorders appear to be independently associated with several physical conditions, including thyroid disease, respiratory disease, arthritis and migraine headaches, according to a report in the Oct. 23 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. This co-occurrence of disorders may significantly increase the risk of disability and negatively affect quality of life.

A general population survey found that in US adults mental disorders result in more than 1.3 billion days each year out of role—unable to work or carry out usual activities. This number equals roughly half as many days out of role as those associated with all chronic physical conditions combined. Condition-specific estimates show that major depression in particular is among the most impairing of all conditions in terms of total lost days of role performance.

Twenty-one years after they first described a fatal genetic disorder in Missouri and Arkansas families, scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have linked the condition to mutations in a gene known as TREX1. The identification will accelerate efforts to understand both the disorder and a broader range of more common conditions that affect small blood vessels, including diabetes.

In contrast, children who have anxiety disorders and conduct problems at age 6 appear more likely to develop PTSD following exposure to traumatic events.
