Resistance to anti-HIV drugs in Uganda developed due to drug supply problems

04-22-2007 · EurekAlert!

Some HIV-infected patients in Uganda who self paid for their antiretroviral medications experienced interruptions in drug supply due to either financial demands or supply logistical disruptions. These treatment interruptions led to the development of resistance to antiretroviral medications in patients.

    09-12-2007 · EurekAlert!
Engineers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have developed tools to help solve two of the main problems slowing the progress of stem cell research -- how to quickly test stem cell response to different drugs or genes, and how to create a large supply of healthy, viable stem cells to study from only a few available cells.

  2. Widely used hepatitis B drug spurs HIV drug resistance
    02-28-2007 · EurekAlert!
A Johns Hopkins study has proven false established medical practice that an antiretroviral drug widely used to treat hepatitis B liver infections was safe to use on its own in patients co-infected with HIV. Their findings demonstrate that treatment with entecavir leads to cross-resistance to other antiviral drugs used to treat the AIDS virus.

    11-09-2007 · EurekAlert!
Adding a single dose of two common anti-HIV drugs can prevent HIV-positive pregnant women from developing resistance to an entire class of drugs, potentially improving future treatment options.Providing tenofovir and emtricitabine with nevirapine during labor greatly reduces the extent of resistance to non-nucleoside reverse transcriptate inhibitors, such as nevirapine, which HIV-positive women take to lower the risk of mother-to-child transmission during childbirth.

  5. Feline virus, antiviral drug studied to understand drug resistance
    10-10-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers at Ohio State will spend the next two years testing their theories about just how an AIDS-like virus in cats is able to resist the powerful medicines that are thrown against it. It's one of the latest efforts at understanding one of the leading problem areas in medicine today -- antimicrobial drug resistance. When bacteria or viruses become resistant to drugs, they become more difficult, or even impossible, to treat.

    04-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers at the Ireland Cancer Center of University Hospitals Case Medical Center have developed methods for treating lung cancer cells that have become resistant to new anti-cancer agents, such as Tarceva (erlotinib). Using a new second-generation of Tarceva-like medications, researchers can overcome the drug resistance, and such drugs are now in development including in clinical trials at the Ireland Cancer Center.

    06-28-2007 · EurekAlert!
Existing methods of detecting drug-resistant forms of HIV are expensive, time consuming and often fail to identify small populations of drug-resistant HIV. Now, researchers have developed a drug resistance screening method that analyzes multiple HIV variants at the same time, while also saving time and money.

The combined supercomputing power of the UK and US 'national grids' has enabled UCL scientists to simulate the efficacy of an HIV drug in blocking a key protein used by the lethal virus. The method -- an early example of the Virtual Physiological Human in action -- could one day be used to tailor personal drug treatments, for example for HIV patients developing resistance to their drugs.
