Plutonium or greenhouse gases? Weighing the energy options
10-23-2006 · EurekAlert! Can nuclear energy save us from global warming? Perhaps, but the tradeoffs involved are sobering: thousands of metric tons of nuclear waste generated each year and a greatly increased risk of nuclear weapons proliferation or diversion of nuclear material into terrorists' hands.

- Giant magnetocaloric materials could have large impact on the environment
06-19-2007 · EurekAlert!
Materials that change temperature in magnetic fields could lead to new refrigeration technologies that reduce the use of greenhouse gases, thanks to new research at the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory and Ames National Laboratory.

- Solar energy conversion offers a solution to help mitigate global warming
03-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
Solar energy has the power to reduce greenhouse gases and provide increased energy efficiency, says a scientist at the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, in a report (view it online) published in the March issue of Physics Today. Last month, The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations released a report confirming global warming is upon us and attributing the growing threat to the man-made burning of fossil fuels.

- Biofuels: An advisable strategy?
03-07-2007 · EurekAlert!
Biofuels have been an increasingly hot topic on the discussion table in the last few years. The main argument behind the policies in favour of biofuels is based on the idea that biofuels would not increase the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. However, a more careful analysis of the life cycle of biodiesel reveals that the energy (and CO2) savings is not so high as it might even be negative.

- Not So Clean: Service industries emit greenhouse gases too
11-11-2006 · Science News Online
Service industries such as the retail trade are creating just as much planet-warming carbon dioxide as the manufacture and operation of motor vehicles do.

- Default options should be used to improve healthcare
10-04-2007 · EurekAlert!
Anyone who has ever tried to set up an internet account or wants to make a purchase on a website, has experienced the 'default option,' an event or condition that will be set in place if no alternative is actively chosen. In an opinion article in the Sept. 28 issue of the NEJM, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, argue that these concepts applied by marketers should also be used by the medical community to benefit patients.

- CGIAR climate change research
12-04-2006 · EurekAlert!
The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), in consultation with the global environmental change science community, is refining a comprehensive climate change agenda that is already generating climate-resilient innovations, including crops bred to withstand heat, salt, waterlogging and drought, and more efficient farming techniques to help poor farmers better use increasingly scarce water and fragile soil. Researchers are also focusing on boosting agriculture's role in reducing climate-altering greenhouse gases.

- CGD ranks CO2 emissions from power plants worldwide
11-14-2007 · EurekAlert!
CO2 emissions of 50,000 power plants worldwide, the globe's most concentrated source of greenhouse gases, have been compiled into a massive new data base, called CARMA -- Carbon Monitoring for Action.

- Something new under the Sun
01-30-2007 · EurekAlert!
That plants grow better if grown in a greenhouse in the correct climate is nothing new. Dutch researcher Rachel van Ooteghem has designed a control system for an improved solar greenhouse that yields more. In the new greenhouse, good climate control with sustainable energy resulted not only in an increased crop yield but also a lower gas bill.

- Weighing the financial risks of nuclear power plants
04-03-2007 · EurekAlert!
Power companies are rushing to invest in new nuclear reactors, largely because of promised government subsidies that make the investment seem as good as investments in other types of energy. A new study from UC Berkeley, LBNL and Georgetown researchers warns, however, that unexpected costs have often arisen in past nuclear plant construction, increasing electricity costs. Because new plants will use untested technologies, such cost surprises could happen again, making nuclear power less attractive financially.
