Social medicine in the 21st century

This week PLoS Medicine publishes a unique collection of articles devoted to social and cultural aspects of medicine, featuring some of the leaders in the field, such as Paul Farmer, David Satcher, Arthur Kleinman, Leon Eisenberg, Nancy Scheper-Hughes and Rafael Campo.    Scientists have today released new findings that could have major implications for food production and global warming in the 21st century. Experts from the Met Office, the University of Exeter and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, have found that projections of increasing ozone near the Earth’s surface could lead to significant reductions in regional plant production and crop yields. Surface ozone also damages plants, affecting their ability to soak up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and accelerating global warming.

   Rice University physicist Michael Deem is taking zeolite design into the 21st Century using a combination of supercomputers at the University of Texas at Austin and disused computing cycles from more than 4,300 idling desktop PCs at Purdue University to create a database containing more than 3.4 million atomic formulations of the porous silicate minerals. Zeolites -- there are 50-odd naturally occurring ones and about 180 synthetics -- are heavily used by chemical manufacturers.
