Meeting the ethanol challenge: Scientists use supercomputer to target cellulose bottleneck
04-24-2007 · EurekAlert!Termites and fungi already know how to digest cellulose, but the human process of producing ethanol from cellulose remains slow and expensive. The central bottleneck is the sluggish rate at which the cellulose enzyme complex breaks down tightly bound cellulose into sugars, which are then fermented into ethanol.

- Diet and lifestyle -- In the cancer fight, eating well is the best revenge
04-15-2007 · EurekAlert!
We all know that eating fruits, vegetables and soy products provides essential nutrition for a healthy lifestyle, while obesity leads to the opposite. Yet proving the effect of nutrition, or obesity, on cancer is an experimental challenge and a focus for scientists. According to emerging evidence being presented at the 2007 Annual Meeting of the AACR, eating well might still be one of the more pleasurable ways to prevent cancer and promote good health.

- Food scientists, material scientists seek common language to preserve flavor, aroma of food
08-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
Food scientists and material scientists agree that the primary purpose of food packaging is to protect the food. Once that is accomplished, the package has to protect sensory quality. One challenge to meeting the second goal is communication between food scientists and material scientists.

- Creating corn for cars
05-04-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new variety of corn developed and patented by Michigan State University scientists could turn corn leaves and stalks into products that are just as valuable as the golden kernels. Right now, most U.S. ethanol is made from corn kernels. This is because breaking down the cellulose in corn leaves and stalks into sugars that can be fermented into ethanol is difficult and expensive.

03-28-2007 · EurekAlert!
Identifying and quantifying specific alpha- and beta-emitting radionuclides in liquid solutions can be challenging and time consuming -- typically taking from days to weeks to get results back from an analytical laboratory. But, when an industrial process-scale plant requires that an accurate, reliable analysis be completed in near real-time from samples retrieved directly from the process line, the challenge could be overwhelming. However, scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have assembled a robust, fully automated prototype process monitor to meet demanding production needs.
