Increasing survival of organ transplant patients by reducing time interval for transported organs
04-26-2007 · EurekAlert!Preservation of an organ intended for transplant during transport from donor to recipient is of primary concern in ensuring a successful transplant. Research presented at the ISHLT 27th Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions today explores two diverging systems for pump preservation -- the Organ Care System and the cold preservation method, and how they each effect survival for heart transplant patients.

10-22-2007 · EurekAlert!
In this retrospective cohort study of data from the Canadian Organ Replacement Register, the researchers found that survival among 14,512 elderly patients who began dialysis between 1990 and 1999 improved over time, despite their increasing burden of comorbidity.

- New organ allocation criteria associated with decreased deaths on liver transplant waiting list
11-19-2007 · EurekAlert!
Changing the method by which donated livers are allocated to potential transplant patients appears to have decreased the number of deaths among individuals on the waiting list as well as shortened the time to transplantation, according to a report in the November issue of Archives of Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

- Disease management programs improve long-term outcomes
03-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
More than 30 percent of patients who suffer heart failure die within one year, but education and support programs have been shown to improve that statistic. According to two studies presented today at the American College of Cardiology’s 56th Annual Scientific Session, education and support programs designed to care for high-risk cardiac patients with more direct interaction and guidance were successful in both reducing hospital visits and increasing heart failure patients' chances of long-term survival.

- Type of stem cell found to reside in transplanted lungs
03-08-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new study involving a type of stem cells from the lungs of transplant patients demonstrates for the first time that these progenitor cells reside in adult organs and are not derived from bone marrow, which leads to the possibility that the cells may be able to help with the rejection of donated organs and with various kinds of lung disease.

- Mayo Clinic Proceedings contributors discuss impact of donor organ allocation system
02-06-2008 · EurekAlert!
Liver transplant is a life saving treatment option for people with end-stage liver disease. Unfortunately, the need for donor livers far exceeds the supply. Each year only about one-third of people who need a donor liver will receive one, and some patients die while waiting. In the February issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, physicians explore how the current system for allocating donor organs in the United States affects outcomes for patients with end-stage liver disease.

- Immune system modulation can halt liver failure in animals
09-25-2007 · EurekAlert!
Massachusetts General Hospital researchers have a developed a totally new approach to treating liver failure -- manipulating the immune response. If the results of the animal study can be applied in human patients, the approach may be able to keep patients alive until donor organs become available or to support liver function until the organ can regenerate itself, eliminating the need for a transplant.

02-01-2007 · EurekAlert!
In a large-scale, multicenter trial of patients with acute lung injury (ALI) or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), researchers showed that higher levels of nitric oxide (NO) in patient urine were strongly associated with improved survival, more ventilator-free days and decreased rates of organ failure.

- Mayo Clinic shows therapy effective for reducing lupus flares
11-09-2007 · EurekAlert!
Mayo Clinic researchers have shown that an immunosuppressive drug used in organ transplant cases is effective in reducing flare-ups in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. SLE results in inflammation of connective tissues and can involve the skin, joints and kidneys. Its cause is unknown. The findings were announced today at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology in Boston.
