Volcanic eruptions, ancient global warming linked
04-26-2007 · EurekAlert!A team of scientists announced today confirmation of a link between massive volcanic eruptions along the east coast of Greenland and in the western British Isles about 55 million years ago and a period of global warming that raised sea surface temperatures by 5 degrees (Celsius) in the tropics and more than 6 degrees in the Arctic.

- Scientists link volcanic eruptions that formed North Atlantic Ocean to ancient global warming
04-26-2007 · EurekAlert!
Scientists examining a spike in worldwide ocean temperatures 55 million years ago have linked it to massive volcanic eruptions that pushed Greenland and northwest Europe apart to create the North Atlantic Ocean. Writing in the journal Science, geologists present evidence that this intense volcanic activity occurred at the same time ocean temperatures jumped five to 6 degrees Celsius.

12-12-2007 · EurekAlert!
Through the study of archaeological material, tax accounts, church registers and account books of monasteries, an international group of fisheries ecologists and fisheries/maritime historians have drawn a picture of marine life in the northern European seas as it looked in the past. Their findings are presented in a special issue of Fisheries Research "History of Marine Animal Populations and their Exploitation in Northern Europe."

02-14-2008 · EurekAlert!
A review of all available ocean data records concludes that the low-oxygen events which have plagued the Pacific Northwest coast since 2002 are unprecedented in the five decades prior to that, and may well be linked to the stronger, persistent winds that are expected to occur with global warming.

- Global warming will reduce ocean productivity, marine life
12-06-2006 · EurekAlert!
A 10-year, satellite-based analysis has shown for the first time that primary biological productivity in the oceans -- the growth of phytoplankton that forms the basis for the rest of the marine food chain -- is tightly linked to climate change, and would be reduced by global warming. This would cause a rapid, overall reduction in marine life.

- Ancient climate change may portend toasty future
12-07-2006 · EurekAlert!
Scientists, including Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology, have found that the Earth's global warming, 55 million years ago, may have resulted from the climate's high sensitivity to a long-term release of carbon. This finding contradicts the position held by many climate-change skeptics that the Earth system is resilient to such emissions.
