Teens can perform CPR as well as adults and should be taught from an early age

Thirteen year olds can perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as well as adults, finds a study published online in BMJ today. The authors suggest that children as young as nine years old should be taught CPR skills including chest compressions.

In a paper published in the November issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, examined the relationship between young adults (age 18-25) observing smoking in movies and the likelihood of starting to smoke. They found that more exposure to smoking in movies was significantly associated with young adults beginning to smoke or becoming established smokers.

Adolescents who participate in physical education at school are more likely to maintain a normal weight as young adults, according to a study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. For each weekday of physical education at school the odds of being an overweight adult decreased by 5 percent. Participation in all five days of physical education decreased the odds of being an overweight adult by 28 percent.

Researchers at Ohio University and University of California at Berkeley have found medullary bone -- the same tissue that allows birds to develop eggshells -- in two new dinosaur specimens: the meat-eater Allosaurus and the plant-eater Tenontosaurus.
