Satellites shed light on global warming
04-27-2007 · European Space Agency (ESA)As climate change continues to make headlines across the world, participants at the 2007 Envisat Symposium this week are hearing how Earth observation satellites allow scientists to better understand the parameters involved in global warming and how this is impacting the planet.

- Space sensors shed new light on air quality
10-22-2007 · European Space Agency (ESA)
Air pollution is becoming one of the biggest dangers for the future of the planet, causing premature deaths of humans and damaging flora and fauna. With their vantage point from space, satellites are the only way to carry out effective global measurements of air-polluting emissions and their transboundary movement.

- Corals and climate change
08-22-2007 · EurekAlert!
A modest new lab at the Rosenstiel School is the first of its kind to tackle the global problem of climate change impacts on corals. Fully operational this month, this new lab has begun to study how corals respond to the combined stress of greenhouse warming and ocean acidification. The lab is the first to maintain corals under precisely controlled temperature and carbon dioxide conditions while exposing them to natural light conditions.

- NOAA scientists to search tropical skies
06-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
Scientists from NOAA's Earth System Research Lab (ESRL) will be among 400 participants heading to Costa Rica this summer to probe one of the most complex and least observed regions of Earth's atmosphere during the rainy season. The NASA-led study will shed light on key processes related to climate change, the stratospheric ozone layer, and global chemistry.

- EuroNews looks at monitoring the changing environment.
01-25-2008 · European Space Agency (ESA)
Signs of a warming climate are already being felt in the icy reaches of the Arctic. The consequences of diminishing sea-ice are far-reaching - affecting the peoples and wildlife reliant on this fragile ecosystem, global climate and even international shipping routes. EuroNews looks at how ESA satellites are an invaluable aid to monitoring this changing environment.

- Himalayan glacier melting observed from space
03-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
The Himalayan glaciers are melting under the effect of global warming. However, the extent of this melting remains difficult to assess from ground surveys owing to the great number of glaciers, the difficulty of access and the vastness of the mountain chain. IRD and CNRS scientists from the research units Great Ice and Legos have overcome these difficulties by using satellite imagery. This is the first step of a much more extensive project: evaluation and surveillance of the whole system of Himalayan glaciers .

10-19-2006 · European Space Agency (ESA)
ESA PR 38-2006. For 28 years, Europe has been operating its famous Meteosat weather satellites in geostationary orbit. Today, they were joined by the first of a brand new generation of meteorological satellites. MetOp is designed to provide a closer view of the atmosphere from low earth orbit, delivering data that will improve global weather prediction and enhance our understanding of climate change.
