Scientists find new agent to fight genetic disorders -- Zorro-Locked Nucleic Acid
04-30-2007 · EurekAlert!A new agent, "Zorro-LNA," may stop some genetic disorders in their tracks. An article appearing in The FASEB Journal's June 2007 issue describes how researchers developed Zorro-LNA to bind with both strands of a gene's DNA, effectively disabling it. This has clinical implications for virtually every condition caused or worsened by dominant defective genes, such as: Huntington's disease, familial high cholesterol, polycystic kidney disease, some instances of glaucoma and colorectal cancer, and neurofibromatosis, among others.

- The dietary history locked up in strands of hair can help diagnose eating disorders
10-16-2006 · EurekAlert!
Women with eating disorders often cannot recognize their problem, or attempt to disguise it. This makes diagnosis and treatment very difficult. But newly published research from Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry shows that analysing the carbon and nitrogen bound into hair fibres can determine whether a person does indeed have an eating disorder.

- Comorbidities common in bipolar disorder, may have genetic link
06-08-2007 · EurekAlert!
While the symptoms of bipolar disorder can be disabling on their own, most patients with the condition also are afflicted with a variety of other psychiatric and physical disorders. Research findings on genetic links between bipolar disorder and other conditions and the incidence of comorbidities will be presented at the 7th International Conference on Bipolar Disorder and will be discussed at a press briefing held at 1:15 p.m., Friday, June 8.

Scientists studying biological systems at the molecular level now have a new hybrid technique to probe the dynamics of the Holliday junction. The Holliday junction is a four-stranded DNA structure that forms during a process known as homologous recombination, which occurs when damaged DNA is repaired. Understanding how DNA repairs itself is an essential step in ultimately developing therapies for genetic disorders.

Children with Williams syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, just love music and will spend hours listening to or making music. A study by a multi-institutional collaboration of scientists, published in a forthcoming issue of NeuroImage, identified structural abnormalities in a certain brain area of people afflicted with Williams syndrome. This might explain their heightened interest in music and, in some cases, savant-like musical skill.
