First clinical trial of gene therapy for childhood blindness

The first clinical trial to test a revolutionary treatment for blindness in children has been announced by researchers at UCL (University College London). The trial, funded by the Department of Health, is the first of its kind and could have a significant impact on future treatments for eye disease.

The trial was conducted at U-Penn where five patients with chronic HIV who had failed prior therapies were given a one-time infusion. They all tolerated the therapy and showed improved immune system response. This is the first publication of an effective gene therapy for AIDS to show positive clinical results in the peer review literature.

    Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN) announced patients with ankylosing spondylitis who received treatment with Enbrel (R) (etanercept) experienced sustained improvement in signs and symptoms, spinal mobility and physical function over 148 to 160 weeks of therapy, according to data from an ongoing open-label, multinational, phase 4 extension study presented at the American College of Rheumatology scientific meeting. These results are consistent with an ENBREL phase 3 clinical trial at 24 weeks.
