  2. Phase I study of novel gene therapy for HIV

    The results are in for Phase I clinical trials of a gene therapy for AIDS. The trial was conducted at U-Penn where five patients with chronic HIV who had failed prior therapies were given a one-time infusion. They all tolerated the therapy and showed improved immune system response. This is the first publication of an effective gene therapy for AIDS to show positive clinical results in the peer review literature.

    At age 32, Maggie Fermental suffered a stroke that left her right side paralyzed. After a year and a half of conventional therapy with minimal results, she tried a new kind of robotic therapy developed by MIT engineers. A study to appear in the April 2007 issue of the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation shows that the device, which helped Fermental, also had positive results for five other severe stroke patients in a pilot clinical trial.

The dosage regimen and treatment length used in this study are not associated with adverse reactions. The results are published in the August 15 issue of the online, open-access journal PLoS ONE.
