Widespread 'twilight zone' detected around clouds

There is something new under the sun that could complicate scientists' efforts to get a fix on how much the world will warm in the future. In addition to greenhouse gases, clouds, and aerosol particles that influence the temperature of the atmosphere, a new ingredient has been discovered: an extensive and previously unseen "twilight zone" of particles that represents a gradual transition from cloud droplets to dry particles.

    A novel experiment, known as CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving OUtdoor Droplets), begins taking its first data today with a prototype detector in a particle beam at CERN , the world's largest laboratory for particle physics. The goal of the experiment is to investigate the possible influence of galactic cosmic rays on Earth's clouds and climate. This represents the first time a high energy physics accelerator has been used for atmospheric and climate science.
