    09-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
An experimental drug has shown promise in extending the survival period for women with recurrent ovarian cancer whose treatment options have dwindled. Early testing data showed that pertuzumab added weeks to the lives of Stage 3 ovarian cancer patients whose disease had returned after treatment with existing chemotherapy, said a researcher from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

    01-09-2008 · EurekAlert!
A drug originally used to treat iron poisoning can significantly boost the body's ability to heal and regrow injured bones, according to a new study. Bone density following the new treatment more than doubled. Researchers found new blood vessel growth, necessary for bone healing, was achieved through a cell pathway.

  3. Does a component of niacin point the way to anti-aging drugs?
    02-08-2007 · EurekAlert!
In recent years, scientists have discovered that a family of enzymes called sirtuins can dramatically extend life in organisms as diverse as yeast, worms and flies. A number of scientific groups and biotechnology companies are eagerly searching for drug candidates able to boost sirtuin activity, hoping to develop an "anti-aging" drug. Now, a new study from scientists at the Wistar Institute points to another strategy for activating sirtuins to unleash their anti-aging powers.

  4. Cisplatin is more effective than carboplatin for treating nonsmall cell lung cancer
    06-05-2007 · EurekAlert!
Some patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer have slightly higher survival rates when treated with the chemotherapy drug cisplatin than another platinum-based drug, carboplatin, according to a study in the June 6 Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The authors conclude that cisplatin chemotherapy should remain the standard of care for these patients.

  8. Cancer stem cells similar to normal stem cells can thwart anti-cancer agents
    06-15-2007 · EurekAlert!
Current cancer therapies often are thwarted because they cannot eliminate a small reservoir of multiple-drug-resistant tumor cells. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine suggests that for chemotherapy to be truly effective in treating lung cancers, for example, it must be able to target a small subset of cancer stem cells, which they have shown share the same protective mechanisms as normal lung stem cells.
