While public perception may frame surfing as a dangerous sport, new research begs to differ. In the first study of its kind, researchers have computed the injury rate among competitive surfers and found they are less prone to harm than collegiate soccer or basketball players. Led by researchers at Rhode Island Hospital and Brown Medical School, the findings are published in the January 2007 issue of the American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Mount Sinai School of Medicine and EXACT Sciences Corporation (NASDAQ: EXAS) announced today the publication of results from a prospective, multi-center study of stool DNA testing. The study found that the test demonstrated an 88 percent sensitivity for colorectal cancer, and with equal detection across all stages of cancer, regardless of the cancer's location in the colon. The study was published online in the American Gastroenterological Association's journal, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and will appear in the January 2007 print issue.

- Health care costs for abused women are significant

Women with a history of abuse by intimate partners have significantly higher health care costs and utilization than women with no history of such abuse, according to a study in the February 2007 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The higher costs and utilization continued long after the abuse ended, the research team from Group Health, the University of Washington, and the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center (HIPRC) found.
