Significant amount of binge eating occurs in restaurants
10-24-2006 · EurekAlert!Contradicting the common perception that binge eating is typically done in private, a significant amount of bingeing occurs in restaurants -- according to a recent study published in the November issue of SAGE Publications' Western Journal of Nursing Research. In the United States, large portion sizes, the increased frequency of eating out, fast-food consumption and sedentary lifestyle, all contribute to the development of obesity.

New research answers an infectious question about eating at restaurants: How clean are manually washed dishes? They found that even when they washed dishes in cooler-than-recommended water, numbers of bacteria on the dishware dropped to levels accepted in the Food and Drug Administration's Food Code. They also found that certain foods -- especially cheese and milk -- can be safe havens for bacteria when dried onto dishware. Lipstick, however, proved to be dangerous to bacteria.

A new study compares the level of a tobacco-specific carcinogen in nonsmokers who work in restaurants that allow smoking with that of employees in restaurants that ban it. Restaurant workers exposed to tobacco smoke on the job were more likely to have a detectable level of NNK, a carcinogen implicated in the development of lung cancer, than those who worked in tobacco-free environments.

It was hoped that islet transplantation would provide a cure for the disease, however, transplant success is short-lived and accompanied by significant side effects. New data indicate that the immunosuppressive drugs used to prevent islet transplant rejection suppress beta-cell regeneration in diabetic mice, raising the possibility that identifying immunosuppressive drugs that do not inhibit beta-cell regeneration might lead to successful regenerative islet transplantation.

Two multinational teams of scientists, including researchers from Arizona State University, are reporting that traces of oxygen appeared in Earth's atmosphere 50 to 100 million years before the "Great Oxidation Event." Analyzing layers of sedimentary rock in a core sample from the Hamersley Basin in Western Australia, the researchers report finding evidence that a small but significant amount of oxygen -- a whiff -- was present in the oceans and possibly Earth's atmosphere 2.5 billion years ago.
