A galactic fossil

05-10-2007 · EurekAlert!

How old are the oldest stars? Using ESO's VLT, astronomers recently measured the age of a star located in our galaxy. The star, a real fossil, is found to be 13.2 billion years old, not very far from the 13.7 billion years age of the universe. The star, HE 1523-0901, was clearly born at the dawn of time.

    02-05-2008 · EurekAlert!
The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has captured a new image of the galaxy NGC 1132 which is, most likely, a cosmic fossil -- the aftermath of an enormous multi-galactic pile-up, where the carnage of collision after collision has built up a brilliant but fuzzy giant elliptical galaxy far outshining typical galaxies.

  2. 'Carnivorous' Coelophysis Dinosaur Fossil Re-examined -- Last Meal Was Primitive Crocodile
    10-02-2006 · ScienceDaily
Four American Museum of Natural History paleontologists have overturned a 1950s claim that a theropod dinosaur called Coelophysis was a cannibal that ate juveniles of its own kind, forcing a revision of a popular story of dinosaur behavior that has been repeated many times in the scientific literature, popular media, and museum exhibits. In order to test the well-known cannibal-Coelophysis hypothesis, the team re-examined the anatomy of the two celebrated Coelophysis fossils said to exhibit cannibalism, as well as the structure of the bone found in the abdominal cavity of one of the specimens.

    12-11-2006 · EurekAlert!
Amid 70-mile-an-hour winds and freezing Antarctic conditions, an American-Argentine research team has recovered the well-preserved fossil skeleton of a juvenile plesiosaur -- a marine reptile that swam the waters of the Southern ocean roughly 70 million years ago.

  4. Solar energy conversion offers a solution to help mitigate global warming
    03-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
Solar energy has the power to reduce greenhouse gases and provide increased energy efficiency, says a scientist at the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, in a report (view it online) published in the March issue of Physics Today. Last month, The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations released a report confirming global warming is upon us and attributing the growing threat to the man-made burning of fossil fuels.

  8. New experiment to investigate the effect of galactic cosmic rays on clouds and climate
    10-23-2006 · EurekAlert!
A novel experiment, known as CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving OUtdoor Droplets), begins taking its first data today with a prototype detector in a particle beam at CERN , the world's largest laboratory for particle physics. The goal of the experiment is to investigate the possible influence of galactic cosmic rays on Earth's clouds and climate. This represents the first time a high energy physics accelerator has been used for atmospheric and climate science.
