Woods Hole Research Center scientists using remote sensing tools to predict bird species richness
05-14-2007 · EurekAlert!Woods Hole Research Center scientists have taken a novel approach to studying biological diversity by making use of laser remote sensing (lidar). WHRC scientists examined the relationships between bird species richness and habitat metrics derived from lidar data acquired by aircraft. They then explored the efficacy of predicting bird richness and abundance based on these metrics. The first phase of this research focuses on results from study sites in the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge in Maryland.

Much of the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Bali will focus on monitoring tropical deforestation and the critical role of remote sensing systems in REDD mechanism development. Using data acquired by the Japanese Advanced Land Observing Satellite, WHRC scientists have completed the first-of-its-kind image mosaic for part of the Amazon. Images acquired globally over narrow timeframes provide for "snapshots" of deforestation, giving leverage to monitoring programs that hinge on timely, accurate forest observations.

Recent studies by Woods Hole Research Center scientists demonstrate that during years of severe drought, tropical rainforest fires can double emissions from tropical forests. Now, an international team of forest and climate researchers has found that halving deforestation rates by mid-century would account for 12 percent of total emissions reductions needed to keep concentrations of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere at safe levels. After completing a two-year pilot phase, Woods Hole Research Center scientists are expanding the scope of the "National Biomass and Carbon Dataset" for the year 2000. NBCD2000 will be an invaluable baseline data set for the assessment of carbon stock in US forest vegetation, improving current methods of determining carbon flux between vegetation and the atmosphere. Work on the remaining mapping zones will be completed at a rate of roughly one every seven working days.
