In a groundbreaking new study from the American Journal of Education, researchers from Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania reveal that first- or second-generation immigrants comprise a disproportionately high percentage of the of black student population at US universities, with the percentage increasing in proportion to the selectivity of the institution. In the Ivy League, more than 40 percent of the black population is of immigrant origin, despite comprising just 13 percent of the black population overall.

The University at Buffalo's School of Dental Medicine is taking a different tack. In one of the few such programs in the nation, third- and fourth-year UB dental students are using non-judgmental tobacco counseling to encourage their patients to quit.

A study finds student use of social network sites such as Facebook and MySpace can be predicted by race, ethnicity and parent education, challenging popular notions of the democratic nature of online communication. The study finds less intermingling of users from diverse backgrounds on these sites than previously believed. White students prefer Facebook; Hispanics prefer MySpace. Asian and Asian-American students use less popular sites including Xanga more than other groups.

An oral vaccine can prevent mice from developing a brain disease similar to mad cow disease, according to research that will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 59th annual Meeting in Boston, April 28-May 5, 2007. Prion diseases, which include scrapie, mad cow disease and chronic wasting disease, are fatal, and there is no treatment or cure.
