  1. EuroNews looks at life on Mars!
02-08-2008 · European Space Agency (ESA)
Is there life on Mars? ESA's Mars Express satellite, launched in 2003, has been scanning and mapping the surface of our rocky neighbour, and it has found that there are both substantial deposits of water ice below the Martian crust and traces of methane in the Martian atmosphere. The next step is ExoMars, due for launch in 2013, which will place a lander on the surface of the red planet with the express aim of searching for past or present signs of life. EuroNews talked to the scientists at the cutting edge of this research.

  2. Astronomers discover record 5th planet around nearby star 55 Cancri
    11-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
A record-breaking fifth planet has been discovered around 55 Cancri, a yellowish star 41 lightyears from Earth and now the only known star apart from the Sun with 5 planets. The discovery implies that the star has more planets that are smaller than the gas giants found so far and possibly include a rocky, Earth-like planet, according to astronomers Geoff Marcy of UC-Berkeley and Debra Fischer of San Francisco State University.

    04-11-2007 · EurekAlert!
One year has passed since April 11, 2006, when Venus Express, Europe's first mission to Venus and the only spacecraft now in orbit around the planet, reached its destination. Since then, this advanced probe, born to explore one of the most mysterious planetary bodies in the Solar System, has been revealing planetary details never caught before.

Scientists at Washington University in St. Louis are paving the way for a smooth landing on Mars for the Phoenix Mission scheduled to launch in August this year by making sure the set-down literally is not a rocky one. A team led involving a Washington University undergraduate student has been analyzing NASA images to make sure that the Phoenix spacecraft lands in a spot on the red planet's northern plains that is relatively rock-free.

11-14-2006 · European Space Agency (ESA)
The launch of COROT on 21 December 2006 is a long awaited event in the quest to find planets beyond our Solar System. Searching from above the Earth's atmosphere, COROT – the CNES project with ESA participation - will be the first space mission specifically dedicated to the search for extrasolar planets.

    06-19-2007 · EurekAlert!
The world is abuzz with the discovery of an extrasolar, Earthlike planet around the star Gliese 581 that is relatively close to our Earth at 20 light years away in the constellation Libra.Bruce Fegley, Jr., Ph.D., professor of earth and planetary sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has worked on computer models that can provide hints to what comprises the atmosphere of such planets and better-known celestial bodies in our own solar system.

  7. Astronomers First To Measure Night And Day On Extrasolar Planet
    10-12-2006 · ScienceDaily
University of Central Florida Astronomy professor Joseph Harrington and University of California at Los Angeles professor Brad M. Hansen and their team have made the first direct observation of distinct day and night temperatures on a planet orbiting another star. UCF Professor Joseph Harrington says that studying planetary atmospheres under such exotic conditions puts terrestrial and solar-system meteorology into a universal context, which aids in our understanding of weather on all planets.

    08-02-2007 · EurekAlert!
A planet orbiting a giant red star has been discovered by an astronomy team led by Penn State's Alex Wolszczan, who in 1992 discovered the first planets ever found outside our solar system. The new discovery is helping astronomers to understand what will happen to the planets in our solar system when our Sun becomes a red-giant star, expanding so much that its surface will reach as far as Earth's orbit.
