News from American Psychiatric Association 2007 Annual Meeting

A new study presented today showed that ramelteon did not impair middle-of-the-night balance, mobility or memory performance in older adults with insomnia, relative to placebo. This study also demonstrated, as in previous studies, that patients treated with zolpidem did have impaired performances on these measures, as compared to placebo. The results of this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial were presented in a poster at the American Psychiatric Association 2007 Annual Meeting.

New analyses of six-month data in stabilized adult patients with schizophrenia from a double-blind, placebo-controlled study demonstrated that bifeprunox maintained stability vs. placebo and displayed a favorable weight and lipid profile comparable with placebo.

   Shire plc announced positive results of four studies of the investigational medication guanfacine extended release (GXR, previously referred to as SPD503), a selective alpha-2A-adrenoceptor agonist. These data from two short-term and two long-term phase 3 studies, presented at the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting, demonstrated GXR significantly improved all core symptoms of ADHD in children aged 6 to 17 years. GXR is the first selective alpha-2A-adrenoceptor agonist tested in well-controlled studies as an ADHD treatment.
