New long-term data analyses for Bifeprunox show favorable effects vs. placebo

Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of Wyeth, and Lundbeck A/S presented clinical study results on bifeprunox, an investigational treatment for adult patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, today at the 2007 annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association. New analyses of six-month data in stabilized adult patients with schizophrenia from a double-blind, placebo-controlled study demonstrated that bifeprunox maintained stability vs. placebo and displayed a favorable weight and lipid profile comparable with placebo.

    REMICADE significantly reduces the incidence of colectomy surgeries for patients with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. According to a primary analysis of long-term extension data from the Active Ulcerative Colitis 1 and 2 trials, there is a 41 percent reduction in the incidence of colectomy, the surgical removal of the colon, in patients receiving REMICADE through 54 weeks, compared to those receiving placebo.

    Breast feeding for a period of 13 months or more has been shown to reduce the mother's the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis, according to new data presented today at EULAR 2007, the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology in Barcelona, Spain. In the study, the longer the breast feeding period, the lower the mother's risk of developing RA in later life. Comparable use of oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy did not show a significant effect on the risk of developing RA.

    One-year data from a second double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 3 study showed therapy with ustekinumab given every 12 weeks provided sustained, clinically meaningful improvement in the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis. According to findings presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, 87 percent and 91 percent of patients responding to ustekinumab 45 mg or 95 mg maintenance therapy, respectively, sustained at least a 75 percent improvement in psoriasis through one year.

    Patients with UC treated with Remicade® (infliximab) had an approximate 50 percent reduction in mean number of hospitalizations per year compared with placebo, according to an analysis of long-term data from a Phase 3 clinical trial presented at the ACG meeting. Patients who responded and those who were in remission at one year had lower mean number of hospitalizations vs. non-responders through one year of treatment.

    In the first-ever study to document the effects of ski resort development on water flows and quality in the northeastern US, University of Vermont researchers studied side-by-side watersheds on Mount Mansfield. Their results show greater-than-expected water volume from the developed watershed, suggesting that models derived from timber extraction studies may underestimate the hydrologic effects of resort development. This study provides baseline data that may contribute to new stormwater management approaches in mountainside development.
