NHLBI Asthma Clinical Research Networks and ALA ACRC Network to present at ATS 2007

Researchers studying inhaled steroids and children with asthma, as well as asthma and obesity, will present new findings from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Asthma Clinical Research Networks at the American Thoracic Society 2007 International Conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, May 23. The session will take place from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in room 131 at the Moscone Center.

    Final results of the first randomized and controlled clinical study of bronchial thermoplasty, the Asthma Intervention Research Trial, were reported today at the annual scientific assembly of the American Thoracic Society. This follows the March publication of the AIR Trial results in the New England Journal of Medicine. These results include patients treated with the outpatient procedure demonstrated a 50 percent decrease in asthma attacks and a 45 percent reduction in rescue medication use.

    Positive results from the Research in Severe Asthma (RISA) Trial of Bronchial Thermoplasty were reported today at the annual scientific assembly of the American Thoracic Society (ATS). Clinically and statistically significant improvements in pulmonary function, asthma control, and quality of life, as well as a reduction in use of rescue medications, were observed following the bronchial thermoplasty procedure in patients with severe asthma. Bronchial Thermoplasty is first non-drug treatment for asthma.

There are two drugs in general use to treat this condition, epinephrine and albuterol, and there is some controversy and passion involved in the choice of medication. In a paper to be presented at the 2007 Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Annual Meeting, a double-blind randomized clinical trial involving over 700 infants showed a clear advantage for albuterol.
