Indiana University School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute researchers report on interaction between drug companies, medical students and residents and conclude that well-designed seminars, role playing and focused curricula can affect medical student and resident attitudes and behavior toward drug companies.

Virginia Tech's entry in DARPA's Urban Challenge is moving forward to the qualifying rounds, thanks in part to a custom-designed drive-by-wire control system and unique navigation software that makes the vehicle's driving decisions almost human. "VictorTango," a team of Virginia Tech engineering and geography students, is among 36 semi-finalists selected by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to vie for the $2 million Urban Challenge prize.

Students in most dental schools are taught to refer tobacco-using patients they encounter in their clinical training to call a "quit line." The University at Buffalo's School of Dental Medicine is taking a different tack. In one of the few such programs in the nation, third- and fourth-year UB dental students are using non-judgmental tobacco counseling to encourage their patients to quit.

Genome-wide search unearths surprising clues for diabetes and triglycerides

Scientists from the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, Lund University and Novartis today announced the discovery of three unsuspected regions of human DNA that contain clear genetic risk factors for type 2 diabetes, and another that is associated with elevated blood triglycerides. The study is among the first to apply a suite of genomic resources to clinical research, including the Human Genome Project, the SNP and HapMap Projects, and genome-scale laboratory and analytical tools.
